Hello Parents, and welcome to the Troop 390 Family.
Right off the start, you probably have questions. Here are some quick answers to questions most parents have. You are also advised to go through our Web site, which has a lot of important information.
- Troop 390's mission is to provide your son with the opportunity to have a high-quality scouting experience and create memories for the rest of his life.
- If you have ANY questions about the Troop, just ask any of the uniformed leaders, or, even one of the boys. It is their Troop.
- Our Troop meets every Tuesday from 7 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. at Faith Lutheran Church, located at 2726 W. Market St. in Fairlawn. Rarely is a meeting cancelled.
- There is a one-time joing fee of $40, which covers:
- BSA registration
- Subscription to Boy's Life magazine
- Boy Scout Handbook
- When you join, please buy a uniform (visit our uniform Web page). At the time of joining, the Troop will provide him with:
- Great Trail Council Strip Patch
- 390 numeral strip patch
- Patrol insignia
- Green epaulet covers (shoulder straps)
- You usually purchase a uniform and all other patches at the Great Trail Council Store. Here is a link to the Great Trail Council's Web site. Click on "Scout Shop" for more information, including a map.
- The scout field uniform is to be worn at all Troop meetings and functions, including travel to and from campouts, unless otherwise specified.
- We campout every month, including a week-long camp experience at Camp Manatoc, our Council's camp located in Peninsula (off Truxell Rd. near Akron-Peninsula Rd. in the Cuyahoga Valley National Park.
- The Troops two main fundraising events of the year are selling popcorn in the Fall, and our annual Spaghetti Dinner. Each scout is expected to participate. We also need your help too!
- The best way to keep up on what is happening with the Troop is to visit this Web site on a regular basis. The newsletter, which is posted on the home page, is updated on almost a daily basis. You will also be e-mailed each time the newsletter is updated. Please provide the Troop an e-mail address.

The
Values of Scouting
Scouting is a values-based program
with its own code of conduct. The Scout Oath and Law help instill the values of
good conduct, respect for others, and honesty. Scouts learn skills that will
last a lifetime, including basic outdoor skills, first aid, citizenship skills,
leadership skills, and how to get along with others. For almost a century,
Scouting has instilled in young men the values and knowledge that they will
need to become leaders in their communities and country.

Troop 390 is a boy-led troop. Over time, the Scouts are given more and more responsibility in
leading various activities in the troop. As they advance from one rank to
another, they are assigned more complex duties and more is expected of
them. Still, parents have a responsibility to help the boys learn
by being good "guides". As in any organization, a Boy Scout
troop requires a fair amount of work to be well run.
The Troop expects at least one parent
of each Scout to serve as a volunteer for the troop. Volunteer service
can be accomplished in many ways. Parents may serve as an Assistant
Scoutmaster, Troop Committee Member, lead a fundraiser, oversee a campout,
etc. There are always numerous tasks that need to be accomplished -- some
on a continuous basis, others as individual events. Whatever you decide
to do, we appreciate the help, and you can be satisfied that you are helping
your son and his fellow Scouts have a better Scouting experience.
Of course, you benefit as well by being
able to dedicate some time away from the household to your son's
activities. You can watch him learn and grow in ways few parents are able
to do. What could be better than that!
